R6: Intimate Moments with Chrissy Teigen

In their article, To See and Be Seen: Celebrity Practice on Twitter, Alice Marwick and Danah Boyd discuss several aspects involved in “performing celebrity on Twitter,” including intimacy, authenticity and sincerity. In the case of the celebrity, intimacy, described by Marwick and Boyd as strategic self-disclosure, “[creates] a sense of closeness and familiarity between themselves and their followers” (147). This closeness comes from displays, in this case, tweets, that demonstrate authenticity and sincerity, defined as emulating the “hidden inner life” and “honesty without pretense” (149). Celebrities on Twitter use intimacy, authenticity, and sincerity together to create a bond with their fans. A bond that Marwick and Boyd say not to dismiss as invalid, as it can have a very real payoff for fans.

Christine (Chrissy) Teigen is a model, author and TV host who is most known her candid use of Twitter. She most recently won the shorty award for “Best Celebrity” for the second year in a row. Teigen, who is also the wife of singer John Legend and mom to their one-year old daughter Luna, uses the social media platform to share family moments, express her thoughts on current events, and to poke fun at herself.

While her feed is not devoid of her celebrity endeavors, like promotional videos for Lip Sync Battle, the show she co-hosts with rapper LL Cool J, Teigen has found a balance between sharing tweets that promote her celebrity status in a way that is still authentic to fans. Such as retweeting a tweet making fun of her appearance in a promotional video for her upcoming Becca x Chrissy Teigen makeup palette.

Aside from tweets that highlight her celebrity status, Teigen's Twitter feed reads as a steady stream of her unfiltered thoughts and cheeky life moments:
