The beneficial success of:
Make-A-Wish
Foundation
The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a well-known
non-profit organization, that allows children with disabilities and life
threating illnesses to get their wishes granted, either if it’s meeting a
famous athlete or celebrity and getting the chance to bond with them over the
course of one day. We now see more of these stories on local news and then end
up appearing in popular television shows. All stories are user-friendly, and
the donations button is clearly positioned at the top of the page to encourage
user to donate. Three buttons allow users to express the emotion they feel
after they have read their story. After deeper exploration, important figures
have expressed their support toward this 5-year-old boy fighting Leukemia, who was
granted the wish of becoming a superhero for a day. Political figure such as
former Vice President, Joe Biden and former Baltimore Ravens, wide-receiver each
tweeted inspirational messages for Kaheem. Below you will find the referenced
tweets, as well as a picture of Kaheem in a Superhero costume giving an interview
to Fox 5 (DC) news.
The goal of this foundation is to
bring joy to their lives, which could lead to positive life-changing
experiences. Also, to make their impossible wishes come true. Putting a smile
on child’s face that has gone through so much in their lives is the most
rewarding thing, someone could ever ask for. Upon further analysis, the
founders conducted research on wish-granting, especially for those kids with
cancer, and as a result they discovered that there was a significant
improvement on medical outcomes. Inspirational messages, positivity shine through
and the public can more closely relate to the participants. Sharing the success
stories across various social media outlets allows for more exposure and more
opportunities to meet celebrities. In Kaplan and Haenlein essay on Users of the world, unite! The challenges
and opportunities of Social Media, they state that “the main objective of
content communities is the sharing of the media content between users”
(Kaplan, Haenlein, 63). The Make-A-Wish Foundation would be a perfect example
of effective use of various social media outlets.
The lessons that could be learned are
that we should never take life for granted and we should never give up. We also
not judge a book by its cover, meaning changing the perspective of “I think I
should help him or her because, their hopeless” or “I think I will help them
because I feel sorry for them.” I also think the mid-set of some people is that
“I think I should help them because I feel like they can’t do it themselves.” This
stigma needs to stop one way or the other. Society needs to value life more,
especially in this fast-changing world. Giving back to others is a great feeling,
we should find more opportunities to so as a society.
