Postmodernism:
What does it really mean?
To me Post-modernism
is a practice in telling the actual truth. We often objectify things because it’s
easier for us to associate them to different things. I also believe that Postmodernism opens many more doors to
many interpretations. Ritzer mentioned that “Postmodernism is a tool kit to the
social world,” (Cyborgology,). This means that there are various ways to apply
the same theory to different things such as social media. The theory might be a
point of interest for a wider range of possibilities, that I think will benefit
from a postmodern framework because “fake news” stories has spiked significantly.
For example, Turkle states that society is now “we are learning how to see ourselves
as plugged- in technobodies” (Turkle,1). This means that our society has become
way too dependent on technology. The younger generation is now more computer-savvy
than ever before because people are looking for rapid productivity as well as practicality.
I agree with the part about the practicality aspect but in my opinion the “Googleazation
of our society is controlling our lives.” (Cyborgology,). Meaning if we don’t know something we could find it in Google because
it’s easier and more effective. In my opinion, these two words “Google it”
should be added to the English dictionary because now society uses Google
frequently. Keeping up to date in current events across different
platforms allows for discussion on the trending topics and provides “peace of
mind” for others. On social media websites, there exists more postings of memories
than ever before. This allows for the preservation of those experiences. By
sharing the content, we are keeping others in the loop. By keeping it private
we are sort of keep it on the down-low.
Overall I
strongly, believe that Postmodernism will always be evolving day by day and that
it will be used in ways that nobody has ever thought possible. Social media is
also a great vehicle for reminiscing on old times with friends or family. On
the other hand, “fake news” is challenging this claim because it has also been
around for a long time. Fortunately, Facebook has acted towards controlling
what content is being posted, for example, if the content is not legitimate it
will be flagged. I also believe that other social media websites will emulate Facebook
and then cyberspace will be safer to use. I would ask myself would this be more
of a challenge or will it be a smooth transition? In conclusion, I believe that
postmodernism will help us solve cyberspace issues that are present in this
modern-day. I’m hopeful this will occur soon rather than later. Postmodernism
will stay put until the end of time. These are my interpretations of what I believe
postmodernism really is.
